America the Beanie Baby

This is America the Beanie Baby, a tribute to the victims of September 11th. The bear is blue with an American flag on its chest. I don't know exactly how many Beanie Baby tributes exist, but I have posted a couple so far.

Banner for Your Yard

The banner/streamer was sold at Wal-Mart, which is a great place to get a read on everyday Americans. This is especially true regarding what consumers are purchasing. This banner was available shortly after September 11th. I don't believe you will find this in the store now.

As an object, it presents an interesting idea. Will people hang their commemorative banner on their house or flagpole each September? Will September 11th be marked by holiday someday in the future? People will decorate their homes with tribute items and this streamer. A new holiday to encourage consumerism and remembrance.

September 11th Cranium Edition

This Cranium New York Booster Pack was created to "celebrate the spirit of New York." All the net proceeds from the purchase were to benefit the September 11th Fund. The fact that this set of 45 cards was created as a direct result of September 11th shows the power and impact of this event. How many events, if any, transcended material culture like 9/11? Kleenex, soap, fabric, and games. Once you start looking (just read my blog posts), you can find numerous examples. Of course, over seven years later, these objects aren't as visible.

Teddy Bear

Teddy bear tribute with Twin Towers and rose on its chest.

Tribute Fabric

Another tribute fabric that features a mix of patriotic images and the well recognized firemen raising the flag at the Twin Towers site (depicted in a stamp issued by the USPS).

Courage: Beanie Baby

There wre a number of stuffed animal tributes after September 11th. Beanie Babies account for a number of them. Here is another variation, Courage, a police dog.

Courage Soap

This bar of "Primal Elements" soap is called Courage. The description on the bar is telling, stating the soap is "Bursting with the all-American fragrance fo sweet crisp apples." The bar features red, white and blue stars. Obviously a more high end soap, it still is a good example showing the influence of 9/11 on household objects.
