America: A Tribute to Heroes was a benefit concert created by the heads of the four major American broadcast networks; Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS. Joel Gallen was selected by them to produce and run the show. Actor George Clooney organized celebrities to perform and to man the telephone bank. The marketing and public relations was headed by Warner Bros. EVP Corp Comm with assistance from the marketing and publicity departments of all four broadcast networks. It was broadcast live by the four major American television networks and all of the cable networks in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. Done in the style of a telethon, it featured a number of national and international entertainers performing to raise money for the victims and their families, particularly but not limited to the New York City firefighters and New York City police officers. It aired September 21, 2001, uninterrupted and commercial-free. It was released on December 4, 2001 on compact disc and DVD.
On a dark stage illuminated by hundreds of candles, twenty-one artists performed songs of mourning and hope, while various actors and other celebrities delivered short spoken messages. The musical performances took place at three studios in Los Angeles (CBS Television City), New York, and London, while the celebrity messages took place at Los Angeles.[citation needed] Some of the musicians including Neil Young and Eddie Vedder were heard working the phone banks taking pledges. The money raised amounted to over $200 million, and was given to the United Way's September 11 Telethon Fund.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine selected this concert, along with the later The Concert for New York City, as one of the 50 moments that changed rock and roll.
The show was also simulcast in Canada; Young and another Canadian singer, Celine Dion, performed.

AFX FX-95 911 Tribute Street Helmet

This 9/11 tribute helmet from 2011 is a great example of the continued impact of 9/11.  9/11 is a brand in itself, driving sales.  Also, this is another example of "corporate curating," where a company is making their mark in history through the production of this object.

Fire Company Brew: Taste the Pride

I always wondered if there was a 9/11 tribute beer out there, and I finally found it.  This Fire Company Brew was created by Philip (PJ) Schrantz, a retired NYC firefighter (Brooklyn).  He relates his story on each bottle and on the package.  Basically, he volunteered at the WTC site (where he lost friends) and when he returned home, he decided to pursue this idea as a way to give back.  The packaging and bottle relate that a portion of the proceeds benefit fire, police and volunteer construction workers.  The packaging also gives more specifics on the organizations being supported.  The beer was brewed at Matt Brewing Company in Utica (NY).  There is a website listed too, www.firecompanybrew.com, which is not active.

9/11 Flag of Honor

I purchased this flag at the gift shop at the 9/11 Memorial.  Right, I said gift shop.  There is a retail experience at the 9/11 Memorial, but it is low key (especially compared to what's out there and what I've featured here).  The store carries mostly books and simple gift items.  I picked up this flag because I thought it pushed the envelope a little.  It features the names of all those who perished in 9/11.  Their names make up the stripes of the flag.  It also highlights proceeds will be donated to 9/11 charities.  That seems a little open-ended, and as I've highlighted in my collection, there isn't much (or any) accountability for corporate donations to 9/11 charities from the proceeds of various tribute, commemorative and memorial items.  I do want to clarify that it is my understanding that many of the 9/11 families like this flag.  If the families took issue with it, I'm sure it wouldn't be available for purchase.  Regarding the gift shop, I don't take any issue with its existence.  The 9/11 Memorial and soon-to-open Museum have operating expenses, and a retail operation allows them to generate earned income to go towards these costs.
